Sloppy Joe recipes may have been one of your favorites as a kid, but sometimes, as an adult, we have to take better care of what we eat. That doesn't mean we want to sacrifice the same great taste--or the warm and fuzzy memories that come along with it. The flavors in our Topless Sloppy Joe recipe will transport you to yesteryear. Just one bite, and you'll feel like a youngster in grandma's kitchen again!
What You'll Need
- 1 tablespoon canola oil
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
- 1 stalk celery, chopped
- 1 pound ground turkey breast
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 (15-ounce) can no salt added tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 3 whole wheat hamburger buns, split
What to Do
- In a large skillet, over medium-high heat, heat oil until hot: cook onion, green pepper, and celery 5 minutes or until tender.
- Add ground turkey and garlic powder. Saute 5 minutes, or until turkey is no longer pink, stirring occasionally.
- Mix in remaining ingredients, except buns, and cook over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes or until sauce thickens and is heated through.
- Spoon mixture over bun halves, and enjoy a topless, or as some folks say, an open-faced delight.
